Alistair Overeem released a statement following his second-round TKO loss to Alexander Volkov at UFC Vegas 18.

Towards the end of the past year, Alistair Overeem set one goal for himself for 2021: have one final run at UFC gold before finally riding into the sunset. But the first step to turning this plan into reality didn’t start well after “The Demolition Man” lost via second-round TKO to Alexander Volkov on Saturday.

Nonetheless, the 40-year-old multi-titled veteran is looking to go back to the drawing board. As he stated in his Instagram post after the fight, the number five-ranked Overeem also revealed suffering a broken nose in the first round.

You’re a true warrior @volkov_alex Congrats on the win!

Yesterday wasn’t my night. I could not recover from that punch in the first round after I broke my nose.

My highest priority right now is to heal up and spend some well deserved time with the family. I’ll be back in the gym soon though.

Thank you all for your support! I see the comments, you guys are the best.

Overeem’s loss to Volkov broke a two-fight win streak as he drops to a record of 47-19 (with 1 NC and 42 wins by stoppage). Meanwhile, the number six-ranked Volkov is now on a two-fight win streak as he improves to a record of 33-8. He also took home a $50K bonus for Performance of the Night.
