Caleb Plant defended his IBF super-middleweight title on the Pacquiao vs. Thurman undercard.

The FOX portion of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Keith Thurman undercard has concluded, and fans at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas witnessed a very easy night’s work for IBF super-middleweight champion Caleb Plant against the embarrassingly overmatched Mike Lee, while undefeated heavyweight Efe Ajagba bested Ali Eren Demirezen in a fight closer than the scorecards suggested.

Caleb Plant (19-0, 11 KOs) def. Mike Lee (21-1, 11 KOs) by TKO at 1:29 of round 3 – Super-middleweights

This was a stupid fight to make even if it was intended to be a showcase first title defense for Plant. He dropped Lee four times unofficially, although Robert Byrd inexplicably ruled one of the knockdowns a slip. A clean left hook in round one sent Lee to the canvas, and the IBF champion outclassed the Notre Dame graduate in the third, dropping him a few more times to get the fight stopped.

This was a brutal mismatch. Lee had never fought at 168 before and is a club fighter at best at light heavyweight. Let’s see Plant in better bouts than this moving forward.

Efe Ajagba (11-0, 9 KOs) def. Ali Eren Demirezen (10-1, 10 KOs) by unanimous decision (99-91, 99-91, 97-93) – Heavyweights

This battle between undefeated Olympians went the way of Nigeria’s Ajagba, who did a good job of using his jab against the Turkish fighter. Despite those two ludicrously lopsided scorecards — one of them was by Adalaide Byrd — Demirezen fared better than expected. He pressured in spurts and landed some nice power shots throughout the bout, but Ajagba was the busier fighter and was more effective with his counterpunching.

Ajagba definitely has some things to clean up, including fighting on the inside and changing up the speed of his punches. He’s the heavily hyped prospect and for someone who only had 16 pro rounds entering this evening, he didn’t have much of an issue going ten rounds.
