Fans of the Bellator Fighting Championships have something to definitely look forward to as the promotions upcoming Season Six kicks off this March. Featherweight champ Joe Warren (7-2) will meet “Summer Series” tournament winner Pat Curran (16-4) on March 9th at Bellator 61.
News of the bout was made by Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney who spoke to Matt Erickson of the ChicagoTribune.com on Tuesday.
Bellator 61 will be the second event of Season Six and is expected to take place on March 9 at The Venue at Horeshoe Casino in Hammond, Ind. The main card will air on MTV2 on Friday’s, vice Saturday’s for the promotions most recent season.
This will be Warren’s first title defence since winning the belt back in September 2010 against Joe Soto. The champ has though, fought a few times earning a split decision over Marcus Galvao in a catchweight bout and after dropping to bantamweight for the Season Five tournament, was KO’d by Alex Vila this past September.
Curran won the last 145-lbs tournament, by stopping Marlon Sandro last August via KO in the “Summer Series” tournament finale. Curren dropped to featherweight following a loss to lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez battling as the Season Two 155-lbs tournament winner. Curren then went on to defeat Luis Palomani, Ronnie Mann and Sandro in last summers featherweight tournament.
