Former Bellator MMA featherweight champion Patricio Freire has been medically suspended for the rest of 2016 after fracturing his right fibula, but there is some good news for “Pitbull.”
Patricio Pitbull’s Bellator 160 main event vs. Ben Henderson ended in unfortunate circumstances, as the former Bellator featherweight champion was unable to continue after suffering a broken right fibula. The injury occurred in the 1st round, but the end of the fight came during the 2nd after feeling the bone move.
There is good news for Pitbull, who posted the x-ray of his injury on Instagram, as he told MMA Fighting that he will not need surgery.
“According to “Pitbull”, it will take six weeks until he’s cleared to put weight on his right leg, and three months until his bone is fully healed. Freire will likely return to the Bellator cage in 2017.”
The California State Athletic Commission has medically suspended Patricio for six months, although if he receives clearance from a physician sooner than six months, the suspension will be lifted.
As for Henderson, who received no medical suspension (other than the mandatory 7-day resting period), he will fight Michael Chandler for Chandler’s lightweight belt on Saturday, November 19th in the Bellator 163 main event.
