Logan Paul calls out Canelo Alvarez for “using steroids” and not “playing by the rules”.

Last week Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was asked about the recent trend of circus fights involving celebrities and retired athletes. The WBC super middleweight champ, and many people’s pick for best boxer on the planet, wasn’t kind when discussing these spectacles.

“I truly believe that it’s a lack of respect. It’s all based on money,” said Alvarez. “It’s all about money.”

Alvarez did offer to spar with both Logan Paul and Jake Paul, the YouTubers who are at the centre of this trend, to show them what boxing is truly all about.

Logan Paul, the elder of the Paul brothers who is due to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. in an exhibition bout in February, didn’t take kindly to those comments. In an interview with The Night Shift Gaming on YouTube, he had some choice words for the Mexican superstar.

“I think he’s the guy who got caught using steroids twice.” Paul said (ht bjpenn.com), when his host brought up Alvarez.

In March 2018 it was revealed that Alvarez twice tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol during random urine tests completed a month earlier. He was given a six month suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, forcing the rescheduling of his rematch with Gennady Golovkin.

“You wanna talk about ‘disrespecting boxing’, let’s talk about a guy who didn’t play by the rules. F**k you!,” added Paul. “I think he’s salty because I get a chance to beat Mayweather and he lost to him. It’s his one loss. I get the shot that he failed to do.”

In 2013, when he was 23-years-old, Alvarez lost a majority decision to Mayweather. Since then he has gone 12-0-1 with wins over Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Gennady Golovkin and Sergey Kovalev.

Two weeks ago he bested Callum Smith to win the WBA (super), The Ring and WBC super middleweight titles. That took his pro record to 54-1-2.

Logan Paul has a 0-1 pro boxing record. His only fight was against fellow YouTuber KSI in November 2019. Jake Paul, who knocked out former NBA player Nate Robinson, in November appears to be boxing former UFC fighter Ben Askren in the near future.
