Jake Paul will look to close out 2023 with a bang as he returns to the boxing ring later TONIGHT (Fri., Dec. 15, 2023) to take on Andre August inside Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Fla., in what will be his ninth professional boxing match. This fight will not be a pay-per-view (PPV), so you only need to be subscribed to DAZN in order to watch all of the action live.

The fight — which will be an eight-round cruiserweight affair — comes just four months after “The Problem Child” beat former UFC Lightweight title contender, Nate Diaz, rather handily in Dallas, Texas (results here). Tired of being criticized for his selection of opponents, Paul hopes that by beating a “boxer with a winning record” in the former of August he will silence some doubters.

As for August, he comes into the fight with a 10-1 record with four wins by way of knockout. The 35-year old is coming off a win over Brandon Martin earlier this year and is now looking to cash in on the biggest win of his career. If he can outshine Paul he could very well put him on the map and set himself up for bigger (perhaps more legit) fights moving forward in his boxing career.

After Paul got back in the win column following his win over Nate Diaz, he tried to lure “The Stockton Slugger’ into accepting a $15 million fight in mixed martial arts (MMA) which, if true, is a rather generous offer. One which Diaz hasn’t seemed to keen to accept, for whatever reason. Nevertheless, “The Problem” child is going back to the boxing ring before he makes an eventual MMA debut. The last time he fought a “real boxer,” he got worked over by Tommy Fury. And while August may not have the name value of the Canelo’s and Crawford’s of the world, he is legit and does have skill to give Paul trouble.

In what is a fight between two struggling pro boxers, Alexander Gueche (18) will face off against Clayton Ward (28) in a fight that will be contested at 118 pounds. Both men have a paltry record of 1-4, but they still managed to lock down a spot on this card.

How The ‘Prelims’ Look:

One of the other featured bouts will be for the vacant Super Middleweight women’s title between Shadasia Green and Franchon Crews Dezurn. Green is coming in undefeated at 13-0 with 11 knockouts on her resume and is the No. 6 ranked fighter in the division. As for Dezurn, she is coming off a tough loss to Savannah Marshall this past summer, losing her Super Middleweight title in England. But after Marshall suffered an injury she was forced to vacate the strap.

Dezurn and Green — who was recently signed by Most Valuable Promotions — do have plenty of bad blood. Green accused Dezurn of one time spitting on her, and while she says he has forgiven her for her past transgressions, she has not forgotten and is out to make her pay come fight night. The winner of this fight moves up the rankings and has the chance to score bigger fights against the likes of Marshall and Claressa Shields.

Yoenis Tellez is an up-and-coming prospects at 154 pounds and is one of the newest fighters under the Most Valuable Promotions banner. He is coming off a technical knockout (TKO) win over Sergio Garcia on the undercard of the Bud vs. Crawford event this past summer to improve his record to 6-0 with five knockouts. His opponent, Livan Navarro, has a tad more experience under his belt with a record of 15-1 with nine knockouts. This fight will be 10 rounds and will be one of Tellez’s tougher test to date in his young boxing career. On that note, a win over someone like Navarro helps raise his stock. This fight could steal the show.

19-year old Lorenzo Medina, already has big goals set for himself, saying he wants to be the youngest Heavyweight champion ever in the sport of boxing. That is a distinction that is currently held by none other than Mike Tyson, who won the title at just 20 years old by defeating Trever Berbick via second-round TKO in 1986. He is off to a fine start with an 8-0 record and seven knockouts, so every win counts if he want to accomplish that feat. He will look to get one step closer to a title fight if he can get a win over Joshua Temple. Standing at 6’3, Temple has heavy hands and is riding a four-fight win streak — all finishes — into his big showdown against “The Giant Killer.”

Another undefeated 19-year old with a record of 6-0 will look to remain unbeaten as Elija Flores battles Javier Mayoral in a 147-pound matchup. Mayoral is 6-3 with only one knockout to speak of on his resume. In another cruiserweight matchup, Zachary Randolph (no, not him) and Michael Manna (no, not him) will go toe-to-toe in the opening bout of the night. Randolph is coming off a TKO loss to Tahlik Taylor, while Manna won a unanimous decision over Joseph Turk, three months after losing a decision to him.

Who Needs A Win Badly:

A win for Paul would be big for confidence, but will it really improve his career? After all, the buzz for this fight is non-existent, and as adamant as he is that a fight against Canelo will go down…it won’t. He can talk all the talk but I never foresee the day that someone of Canelo’s stature will stoop down to fighting someone like Paul. Now, if “The Problem Child” loses again to a man who has dedicated his life only to boxing, then his stock will take a hit because he will be 0-2 against “real boxers.” Should that come to pass, do you really think any high-level boxer is going to want any part of Paul after that to tarnish their legacy? It will be back to circus fights against way past-their prime UFC stars and NBA players with no combat training whatsoever for “The Problem Child” with another loss.

Interest Level: 6.5/10

Look, the Paul brother fanatics will tune in and will continue to eat this up, but the majority of combat hard core fans aren’t even that privy to this event because the promotion for this has been non-existent. Even Paul — who is a social media genius — has failed in that department for this go-around. When he was fighting Diaz, that fight sold itself but even then he and Nate were going full force promoting the event. For this one, there is no buzz, nothing. The bright side for Paul and Co. is that this one is on a Friday night, which is actually a smart move to not go head-to-head with UFC 296 on Saturday (Dec. 16,), which features two title fights and healthy main card. But there are still going to be plenty of people who tune in to see if Paul gets his blocked knocked off by a pro boxer, or look for a reason to cry “fix” if he comes out on top. Either way, Paul will get his fair share of views one way or another. Of course, his bitter rival KSI is holding his own event against “Speed” the same night in London, so he may not get all the eyeballs he was hoping for.
