Tyson Fury was expected to face Anthony Joshua later this year.

Instead, the former heavyweight boxing champion will abruptly end his career in the “sweet science,” assuming today’s surprise retirement announcement is not a ploy to drive up his already-considerable asking price for a return to the ring.

This is not the first time “The Gypsy King” called it quits.

“Hi everybody, I’m gonna make this short and sweet — I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing,” Fury told his Instagram followers. “It’s been a blast. I have loved every single minute of it and I’m going to end with this: Dick Turpin wore a mask! God bless everybody, see you on the other side.”

The towering Brit turned 36 back in August.

Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) is coming off back-to-back losses to Ukrainian bruiser Oleksandr Usyk, a championship rivalry that followed a poor performance against former UFC heavyweight titleholder Francis Ngannou in late 2023.

“It’s been a blast,” Fury added. “Thanks to everyone who helped out along the way!”

Joshua has yet to comment.
