Ben Fodor (a.k.a. Phoenix Jones) will meet Emmanuel Walo in his World Series of Fighting debut next month, according to WSOF executive vice president Ali Abdel-Aziz.
The welterweight fight will take place on the main card of WSOF 20, which is scheduled to take place at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, CT.
Fodor (5-0-1) signed with WSOF last week after ESPN ran a feature about his crime fighting alter ego, Jones. The leader of the Rain City Superhero Movement in Seattle, he has been fighting crime for five years while also pursuing a career in MMA. On Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour, Fodor said he received several contract offers after the feature aired, but he chose WSOF for one simple reason.
“They didn’t want me to stop being Phoenix Jones,” he said. “The other contracts had a lot of clauses about what you could and could not do. And it didn’t exactly say ‘stop being Phoenix Jones,’ but it did sort of say that. It’s like, eight weeks before a fight you can’t be engaged in a risky or mischievous behavior. And other contracts said that they had the rights to the Phoenix Jones name, so they were going to make dolls and action figures and stuff.”
Walo (7-2-1) is 1-0 in WSOF, however, he’s coming off an 11-second knockout loss to Chuck O’Neil at CES MMA 27 in January. Prior to that loss, Walo was unbeaten in eight straight fights.
WSOF 20 will be headlined by David Branch vs. Ronny Markes, and the main card will air live on NBCSN.
