“Platinum” Mike Perry is the new brawler on the block, and many had him pegged to replace Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone as the new fighter’s fighter on the roster, the guy that’d step up and take any fight at any time. While Perry certainly continues to build his cred with the UFC, Cerrone proved he’s still got ample juice left with a solid first round submission win over the young gun.

The armbar finish came at 4:46 (watch the highlights here), and even if Perry had escaped, Cerrone managed to maul him in the process. Afterward, “Platinum” took to Twitter and laid out the extent of the damage done:

Cerrone explained just how the submission came together during a post-fight media scrum.

“Once I’d seen the clock, there was 30 seconds left, the monitor was right above me,” he said. “I was like, oh I better spin for this armbar, so I did. He should have rolled the other way out of it, I don’t know why he didn’t. I was like ‘Pfft, gotcha!’ So I went belly down on it, I was just gonna take it until the referee pulled me off.”

“I felt it pop before I went belly down,” Cerrone said with a smile. “So the rest was just tearing the chicken wing off, yeah. I was taking it home with me.”

The win cemented Cerrone’s place in history with two impressive records: Most UFC wins (21) and most UFC finishes (15). “Cowboy” credited the win to his family and new baby son, saying he had renewed purpose in the cage and was ready to make a lightweight title run.

“It didn’t matter what Perry had,” Cerrone said. “I’m coming. Here I come.”
