When the UFC announced Rashad Evans was injured and wouldn’t be able to fight Daniel Cormier at UFC 170, it expected him to be cleared to resume training in four weeks. However, Evans announced Tuesday that he will be out of action considerably longer.
The former UFC light heavyweight champion consulted with Dr. Robert Kvitne in Los Angeles and learned that he will have to undergo surgery this week to fix his knee injury.
“I am deeply disappointed to be missing the action at UFC 170,” Evans stated. “But I am, as always, incredibly grateful for the support of my family, friends, management, the UFC, and most of all my fans during this minor setback. Thank you for your continued messages of support. I’ll be back stronger than ever!”
Evans, a 34-year-old fighter who has had knee injuries in the past like the one that forced him out of a title fight with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in 2011. “Suga” is expected to be out of training for six months.
