Former UFC flyweight title contender Ray Borg has been through quite a lot in the past year-and-a-half.

‘The Tazmexican Devil’ has been out of action since he lost a title bid to dominant former champion Demetrious Johnson at October 2017’s UFC 216. Since then, he’s been forced to watch young son undergo seven surgeries in his first year of life.

Borg will finally return to the Octagon at this weekend’s (Sat., March 30, 2019) UFC on ESPN 2 from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After repeated issues making the flyweight limit, Borg moved up to bantamweight. He was originally scheduled to fight Pingyuan Liu in his bantamweight debut, but his opponent was changed to Kyler Phillips for undisclosed reasons.

On March 25, however, Phillips was removed from the card and replaced by Casey Kenney, giving Borg his third opponent for the card. Earlier today, Borg missed weight by 1.75 pounds despite the move up in weight. The fight will continue at a catchweight, but not before Kenny gets a bigger piece of Borg’s pie.

According to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, Kenney will receive 30 percent of Borg’s purse instead of the customary 20 percent.

Harsh Or Not?

Many on social media were quick to jump on Kenney’s supposed decision to negotiate for an extra 10 percent. Others were not so forgiving to Borg, noting that his job was to show up and make weight. It is important to note that he had several issues with it at flyweight.

However, he’s also been put through the ringer in recent months, so several fans thought perhaps Kenney could be a little more understanding. He did take the fight on a week’s notice and made weight, so it’s easy to see why he wouldn’t be.

Either way, the bout will proceed as planned. Borg is just going to be a substantial amount lighter in the pocketbook as a result.

What do you think? Did Kenney do the right thing by looking out for himself, or should he have been more compassionate?
