Referee ‘Big’ John McCarthy responds to Daniel Cormier’s apology following UFC 214 diatribe
Shortly after dropping his light heavyweight title to Jon Jones in the UFC 214 pay-per-view (PPV) main event (recap here), a clearly-concussed Daniel Cormier — just moments removed from his technical knockout loss to “Bones” — ripped into longtime referee John McCarthy for stopping the fight.
That said, there was no disputing the finish.
Once “DC” came to his senses (and likely watched this replay), he offered a public apology to the man in back (read it here), one that apparently wasn’t needed when all was said and done.
“You have nothing to apologize for,” McCarthy wrote on Twitter. “You have been an incredible champion who has represented the sport of MMA with class and dignity. You also fought a great fight against an incredible competitor. It was an honor being in the cage with two of the greatest.”
No word yet on what Cormier, 38, plans to do in the wake of his loss. After all, “DC” has only lost to Jones and pretty much did whatever he wanted with the rest of the competition.
There’s also some unfinished business with Jimi Manuwa, who also got stopped at UFC 214 (watch it). A win over “Poster Boy” would be a nice way for Cormier to wrap up his impressive combat sports career.
