Chris Weidman will be looking for a career resurgent win on August 8th.
Chris Weidman is set to return to the division he previously held the title at and defended three times, as he meets Omari Akhmedov in a middleweight bout in August 8th.
Igor Lazorin of TASS reported the matchup, though the UFC is yet to confirm the fight. The UFC is yet to reveal a location or a venue for their scheduled card.
Weidman (14-5) has been a shell of his former self since 2016, only winning one of his last six UFC fights. A KO loss to Jacare Souza prompted his move up to 205-pounds, but “The All American” was finished in his debut by Dominick Reyes. Weidman was scheduled to meet Jack Hermansson in May but the event was cancelled due to the coronavirus.
Akhmedov (20-4-1) has recently put together a good winning streak in the UFC, having his hand raised in five of his six last contests. The Russian, who used to fight at 170-pounds, won decisions against Ian Heinisch and Zak Cummings in 2019. Akhmedov is undefeated since returning to middleweight.
A heavyweight fight between former title challenger Derick Lewis and Alexey Oleynik was recently announced as the main event for the August 8th card.
