After years of riding high as a megastar in Japan, Bob Sapp notoriety in combat sports has waned. In 2014, the former K-1 and Pride fighter even announced his retirement from combat sports. Although he returned to the ring in 2015 for Japans’ new big MMA promotion RIZIN.
Most recently, he’s been connected to some sort of battle of strength against a bear for an end of the year spectacle show called Kyokugen 2017. But, while fans were still coming to grips with his latest plug for carnival sideshow spectacle, Sapp’s fading reputation has taken a much more concerning hit.
Japanese outlet Shukan Bunshun reports that Sapp’s girlfriend is accusing him of domestic violence, along with photographs of the alleged injuries resulting from the apparent attack.
The as of yet unidentified victim has reportedly been in a relationship with Sapp since sometime around 2011, and has assisted with his management.
The alleged assault apparently happened in March of last year. The victim also provided a screenshot of an apology note purportedly written by Sapp via Facebook Messenger.
Along with his bear fighting plans, Sapp supposedly was set to participate in a sumo match against retired Yokozuna Asashoryu for Japan’s web TV service AbemaTV on New Year’s Eve (h/t Go Yamamoto). It remains to be seen whether either event goes forward as planned following these allegations.
