Just hours after former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion, Conor McGregor, hastily announced his retirement from mixed martial arts (MMA), comes accusations that “Notorious” was recently arrested in Ireland on charges of sexual assault.

That’s according to a report from The New York Times, citing four anonymous sources.

McGregor was reportedly released after being questioned by police in January. He has not been charged with a crime at this time. Indeed, no formal charges have been filed yet — the investigation continues as law enforcement officials try to piece together an allegation made at Sandyford’s Beacon Hotel in Dec. 2018. The Irish superstar, accordingly, should be considered innocent until proven guilty.

It’s been a tough couple of months for McGregor, who failed to recapture his lightweight crown at UFC 229 back in Oct. 2018. Just last month, “Notorious” was arrested for allegedly smashing a fan’s cell phone in South Florida.

He was expected to make his Octagon return this July; however, those plans went by the wayside in favor of retirement, presumably to concentrate on his Proper No. 12 whiskey, among other things.

A police spokesman would not identify the “unnamed sportsman” currently under investigation and McGregor’s lawyer did not respond to requests for comment, according to the report.
