According to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, Dustin Poirier bowed out of his would-be UFC 254 co-headliner fight against Tony Ferguson.
If you’re one of those already pumped for UFC 254’s scheduled co-headliner between Tony Ferguson and Dustin Poirier, this piece of news might not sit well with you. As it turns out, “The Diamond” withdrew from the fight after failing to come to terms with the UFC.
ESPN’s Ariel Helwani broke the news, stating Poirier is now headed back to his hometown in Lafayette, Louisiana from his training home base in Coconut Creek, Florida.
“UFC and I didn’t come to terms. I will not be fighting on Oct. 24,” Poirier reportedly said.
On Wednesday, Poirier already spoke to ESPN regarding the fight deal.
I’m in. I just need to be compensated if they want this fight. Simple as that. I’m a prize fighter and the prize needs to be right.
The winner of Ferguson vs. Poirier would likely be the next man to challenge whoever comes out victorious between headliners Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje.
UFC 254 takes place on October 24th in Abu Dhabi. With fight night still six weeks away, there’s good a chance for things to take a 180-degree turn. But as of this posting, this fireworks of a matchup is apparently off the table.
