Report: Rory MacDonald vs. Stephen Thompson in discussions, but not yet official

UFC Tonight reported that Rory MacDonald could be taking on Stephen Thompson in his next bout, though it is not official yet.

A pivotal welterweight match could be in the works for a UFC event in the near future as UFC Tonight reported Stephen Thompson could face former title challenger Rory MacDonald.

Ariel Helwani was the one to break the news during the show, although Joe Rogan already stated during his podcast, on February 21, that he did a preview video for this event.

On a trip to Manila at the end of February, Thompson also said that his next bout has yet to be finalized, and made a case for a title shot instead.

Thompson (12-1) currently rides an impressive six-fight winning streak, including a first-round TKO of former champion Johny Hendricks in his last outing. “Wonderboy” also holds wins over notable fighters such as Jake Ellenberger, Robert Whittaker and Patrick Cote. His sole loss remains a unanimous decision defeat to Matt Brown back in 2012.

MacDonald (18-3) has been away from the Octagon ever since his “Fight of the Year” award winner performance against Robbie Lawler at UFC 189, last July.  Before that, the 26-year old had three straight wins over the likes of Tarec Saffiedine, Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia.

Even though the fight has been reported to be in discussions, there is still no event linked to it as of yet.
