The UFC is looking to book a heavyweight title fight between Daniel Cormier and Brock Lesnar in August.
According to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, the UFC is looking to book a heavyweight title fight between reigning champion Daniel Cormier and former champ Brock Lesnar sometime in August, although no event or venue has been announced.
Helwani first reported the news on SportsCenter yesterday.
Lesnar, the WWE Universal champion, will look to defend his title against Seth Rollins this Sunday at WrestleMania 35, the biggest professional wrestling event of the year.
The 41-year-old last fought in the Octagon almost three years ago at UFC 200, where he beat MMA and kickboxing veteran Mark Hunt in the co-main event. The win was overturned to a No Contest, however, after Lesnar tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.
A heavyweight title fight vs. Cormier has been in the works for almost a year, dating back to when Lesnar stormed the cage and got into a scuffle with ‘DC’ after his stunning knockout win over Stipe Miocic at UFC 226. Since then, Cormier has gone on to defend the heavyweight title against Derrick Lewis, outclassing and submitting ‘The Black Beast’ in the UFC 230 main event.
Expect the UFC to officially announce Cormier vs. Lesnar in the coming weeks.
