It appears as if a pivotal middleweight fight has been booked for this upcoming fall. According to a report from Combate, No. 4-ranked controversial Brazilian legend Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort will square off with No. 7-ranked Gegard Mousasi at October 8, 2016’s UFC 204 from Manchester, England.
Belfort has lost two of his last three bouts including a title loss to former champion Chris Weidman in May 2015 and most recently a brutal stoppage loss at the hands of top contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. “The Phenom’s” only win in that stretch came via knockout over Dan Henderson in November 2015.
Mousasi, on the other hand, has won four of his last five bouts and is coming off of an impressive stoppage victory Thiago Santos at July 9’s UFC 200. Prior to that victory, Mousasi had taken out the likes of Henderson, Constantinos Philippou, and Thales Leites with his only loss in that stretch coming against Uriah Hall in September 2015.
Although this bout has yet to be officially confirmed by the promotion, it does make quite a bit of sense given the current landscape of the 185-pound division. Speaking of the middleweight class, UFC 204 is expected to be headlined by a title bout between reigning champion Michael “The Count” Bisping and Henderson.
