Dillian Whyte avenged his loss to Alexander Povetkin winning by fourth-round TKO.
It was revenge for Dillian Whyte (28-2, 19 KOs) in his rematch with Alexander Povetkin (36-3-1, 25 KOs), as he won by fourth-round TKO to become the new WBC interim heavyweight champion.
Whyte opened the fight by throwing some heavy overhands that glanced off Povetkin and made the Russian lose his footing. It seemed Povetkin was in trouble as he stumbled against the ropes and almost hit the mat, but he eventually found his feet and fought on.
The second round was more competitive as Povetkin started to land some power punches, but Whyte was still the aggressor working off his jab to land some hard combinations.
Whyte went down in the third round off of a slip. Povetkin walked on to a clean right hand from ‘The Bodysnatcher’ that sent the Russian on the backfoot. The aggression from Whyte continued in the fourth round as Povetkin was hurt backing himself against ropes.
The fight was only going one way as Povetkin was on the defense struggling to land any punches. Whyte landed a right hand that made Povetkin bounce off the ropes. After a few follow up punches Whyte landed a left hook that dropped Povetkin and the referee rightfully waved the fight off.
Whyte is now the mandatory challenger for Tyson Fury’s WBC heavyweight belt. That’s unlikely to happen anytime soon as the mega-fight between Fury and Anthony Joshua is closer and closer to being finalised.
Official result: Dillian Whyte def. Alexander Povetkin by TKO, 2:39 of round 4
