Ricardo Lamas wants to be the next in line against UFC featherweight kingpin Jose Aldo, and he doesn’t mind waiting a few more months.
Lamas was set to face Chan Sung Jung on July 6 at UFC 162, but the UFC decided to pull “The Korean Zombie” from the bout to replace Anthony Pettis against Jose Aldo at UFC 163 in Rio de Janeiro. After Aldo’s fifth successful title defense, the MMA Masters talent wants his shot at the championship belt.
“I definitely believe I’m next in line,” Lamas told MMAFighting.com on Wednesday. “If the UFC can guarantee me a title shot I will wait for it.”
Aldo broke his right foot on the first kick he landed against on Sung Jung, and Lamas realized something was wrong during the fight.
“I thought Aldo was being very reserved in this fight, but after learning he hurt his foot it made sense,” Ricardo said. “When I saw how the first kick landed I assumed he hurt his foot, so I wasn’t surprised to learn that it was broken. I thought Aldo would win, (but) I didn’t think he would win how he did, with Jung’s shoulder popping out.”
Aldo has two knockout wins under the UFC banner, and both happened when he fought in Brazil. Lamas wants the fight, and he would accept a trip to Aldo’s “neighborhood” to add another victory to his impressive record inside the octagon.
“I don’t care where the fight is, I just want the opportunity,” he said.
