ROH World Champion Davey Richards battles “Die Hard” Eddie Edwards
Press Release – New York, NY – This Friday, LIVE on www.GFL.tv Ring of Honor (ROH) closes out a historic 2011 with its most talked about iPPV of the year, Final Battle 2011. 3 ROH titles will be on the line, including the most coveted singles championship in the game, the ROH World Title. Tune in December 23 to see the most cutting-edge professional wrestling group in North America.
In the main event, ROH World Champion Davey Richards battles “Die Hard” Eddie Edwards in a rubber match. Earlier this year Richards defeated Edwards to win the World Title at Best in the World 2011. It was a grueling and exhausting match and one of the standout moments in ROH history. In 2010, Edwards defeated Richards in the finals of a tournament to crown the first ever ROH World TV Champion. It seems these two only lock up when the stakes are at their highest and that is exactly what is going to happen on December 23. For this bout, Richards will have Team Richards at his side while Edwards has enlisted the help of UFC Hall of Famer Dan “The Beast” Severn. Richards is known for his variety of submission holds and true grit inside of the ring and now with the help of Severn, Edwards has added the debilitating Dragon Sleeper submission to his arsenal and has also acquired a nasty streak of his own by working with one of the greatest shooters in the world. Will this match be the final blow to the American Wolves?
The ROH World Tag Team Titles are also at stake as the World’s Greatest Tag Team (Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas) defend against the Briscoe Brothers (Mark and Jay). This feud has taken a turn for the worse as the Briscoe Brothers have decided to gain an advantage by any means necessary and that included hurting Benjamin’s ribs. The Briscoes are hell-bent on winning their 7th World Tag Team Titles and ready to do anything and everything to make that happen at Final Battle 2011. It’s still unknown how Benjamin will enter the match. He will be far from 100%, but if the WGTT has proved anything over their nearly decade-long run as tag team partners, it’s that Haas and Benjamin are always at their best when their backs are against the wall. This is one of those situations. The Briscoes have called their bluff and now it’s time for the WGTT to respond.
Jay Lethal defends his ROH World TV Title in a 3-Way Match against former TV Champ El Generico, and “The Prodigy” Mike Bennett. Lethal has made a triumphant return to ROH over the last several months and this bout against the enigma that is El Generico and the rising star Mike Bennett will be Lethal’s toughest test to date. Bennett believes he should already be the World TV Champ and he will use Final Battle 2011 to prove it once and for all.
Steve Corino battles Kevin Steen in a Grudge Match where the rules are simple. If Steen wins he is reinstated as a full member of the ROH roster. If Corino wins, Steen is gone for good. Corino used to mentor Steen so this is a classic matchup of teacher versus student. Although Corino may have taught Steen about the intricacies of what goes on inside of the squared circle, he cannot account for what goes on inside the mind of Kevin Steen. Steen has everything to prove in this match against the former World Champ Corino as this is a career defining match for the young Canadian. Steen will also have extra incentive as ROH Executive Producer Jim Cornette will be at ringside for this bout. Steen would love nothing more than to stick it up Cornette’s backside and if he beats Corino, figuratively that’s what he will be doing.
Also scheduled to wrestle is former ROH World Champion Roderick Strong in the Roderick Strong Invitational Challenge. The opponent is a mystery but one thing is for sure. Strong will look to make an example out of the challenger and use it as a reminder to the wrestling fans that it should have been him in the main event battling for the ROH World Title.
