It looks as if Ronda Rousey will be on the shelf for the immediate future. In addition to the nine stitches she received on her right hand, the UFC’s women’s bantamweight champion also suffered a broken right thumb sometime during her 16-second starching of Alexis Davis in UFC 175’s co-main event.
MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani confirmed the news on Wednesday’s edition of UFC Tonight. Rousey is expected to require neither a cast nor surgery to repair the broken digit.
As anticipated, Rousey is also scheduled to undergo surgery on her right knee on Tuesday of next week. Rousey first revealed her need for the surgery post-fight at UFC 175, which took place July 5th at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV.
“My knee is really stable,” she explained. “All the ligaments are fine, there’s just stuff floating around in there.
“It’s just something that’s more maintenance that I need to do, so it’s not really a major knee surgery at all. It’s just a scope. I literally walk out of there and [should] be 100-percent in two weeks.”
Rousey (10-0), whose stunningly quick victory over Davis marked the fourth successful defense of her UFC title, added that she expects her knee to fully healed before her hand. Either way though, considering that Rousey expressed a desire to fight again at the UFC’s year-end show, the injuries are unlikely to prevent her from achieving her preferred return date.
