Double champ Amanda Nunes and former bantamweight champ Holly Holm will finally meet, facing off for the 135 pound title on July 6th.
ESPN has revealed the big headline fights planned for the UFC’s big International Fight Week card on July 6th. UFC 239 will feature two belts being defended: Jon Jones vs. Thiago Santos for the light heavyweight championship, and a women’s bantamweight title fight between double champ Amanda Nunes and Holly Holm.
Holm and Nunes are best known to the greater world for defeating Ronda Rousey and destroying her cred as baddest woman on the planet. Holm went first, shocking the world with a head kick knockout in front of 54,000 people in Melbourne, Australia. After a year away from the sport, Rousey returned … and ran right into the buzzsaw that is Amanda Nunes, getting battered and finished in just 48 seconds.
While Holm and Nunes have orbited at the top of the women’s divisions over the next three years, they never ended up facing each other. Holm would drop the bantamweight title she won off Rousey to Miesha Tate in her next defense, the start of a 1-4 skid that included two unsuccessful shots at the featherweight title. Most recently, she won her first fight at 145 pounds against Megan Anderson in June of 2018.

Nunes took the 135 pound strap off Tate and defended it three times following the Rousey win. Most recently, she moved up to 145 pounds to face seemingly unstoppable champ Cris Cyborg in December of 2018. She once again shocked the world by making quick work of Cyborg, knocking her out under a minute into their fight and becoming the first women’s double champ in UFC history.
Now Nunes and Holm will face each other, with the 135 pound belt up for grabs. Based on the main and co-main alone, it should be one hell of an event.
