‘Rumble’ on scrapped UFC 206 title fight: There’s a ‘cloud hanging over me’

Anthony Johnson feels as though he’s been getting some bad luck as of late.

Although Anthony Johnson is ranked as the UFC’s No. 1 light heavyweight contender and is riding a three-fight KO streak, the 32-year-old has had a stroke of bad luck when it comes to title fights.

Rumble was originally set to challenge former champion and pound-for-pound great Jon Jones last year, but the bout fell through after ‘Bones’ was arrested for a hit-and-run.

Just last week, UFC 206 opponent Daniel Cormier was also forced to withdraw from their championship rematch after suffering an undisclosed injury.

Johnson, a former welterweight contender, believes the scrapped title fights are a sign of bad luck but admits that these things happen in the sport all the time.

“In the cage, out of the cage, I’ve always got something going on,” Johnson said on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour (h/t Dave Doyle of MMA Fighting). “I’ve always got a cloud hanging over me.”

“This is just the world we live in when it comes to this sport,” Johnson said. “You’re gonna win some, lose some, and right now I don’t know if this is a win or a loss but I’m just going with the stride you know what I mean?”

Johnson did fight ‘DC’ for the vacant LHW championship at UFC 187, but ended up succumbing to a rear-naked choke in the third round. Since then, the Florida-based talent has knocked out Jimi Manuwa, Ryan Bader and Glover Teixeira, and has established himself as one of the most feared strikers in the sport.

Johnson was offered a replacement fight against surging middleweight Gegard Mousasi, but felt the matchup didn’t make much sense and has decided to wait for Cormier to return – which is expected to be early next year.
