Santiago Ponzinibbio was impressed with Donald Cerrone’s latest win and would like to challenge ‘Cowboy’ in his next fight.
After Santiago Ponzinibbio cruised to a unanimous decision win over the heavy-handed Mike Perry at UFC on FOX 26, the surging welterweight prospect called out two-time title challenger Stephen Thompson, who is ranked as the number one contender in the world.
Thompson, 35, seemingly has no interest in the match-up so Ponzinibbio is now gunning for Donald Cerrone, who earned a much-needed win over Yancy Medeiros at UFC Fight Night 126 on Saturday, KO’ing the Hawaiian in the closing seconds of the first round.
Ponzinibbio, who trains out of Coconut Creek’s American Top Team, was impressed with Cowboy’s win and would like to do battle with the UFC fan favorite inside the Octagon.
“What a fight,” Ponzinibbio posted on Instagram. [Donald Cerrone] is an impressive athlete. Let’s have a war in [UFC Chile] brother!”
Ponzinibbio, who hails from La Plata, Argentina, is on a six-fight win streak and is ranked just one spot above Cerrone. However, it’s doubtful that Cerrone will accept the fight, as the MMA veteran plans to move back down to the lightweight division to pursue a high-profile bout against the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov, who is scheduled to take on Tony Ferguson for the ‘undisputed’ lightweight title at UFC 223 on April 7.
“I want [155 pounds]. I want to go get that belt,” Cerrone said after his big win in Austin, Texas. “Khabib [Nurmagomedov], I’m coming baby. I’m coming. I ain’t scared to fight you.”
