Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight contender, Thiago Santos, took Jon Jones all five rounds in their UFC 239 pay-per-view (PPV) main event earlier this month in Las Vegas, and nearly won the damn thing despite a pair of severely injured knees.

In fact, the attending physician had no scientific explanation for how “Maretta” continued fighting, according to a report from ESPN, especially considering the damage that was done to the Brazilian’s lower half.

Damage that will need surgery to correct.

“Today [at] 1 p.m. I’ll do the surgeries on my two knees,” Santos wrote on social media. “Pray for me.”

A timeline for his UFC return has not been established.

There was talk of an immediate rematch after the scorecards were released, but the “Bones” team, as well as UFC president Dana White, shot down any possibility of a late 2019 do-over. Probably because the real money comes with a move to heavyweight.

Where Jones can cash in against mounters like this guy.

As for Santos (21-7), the 35 year-old slugger remains ranked at No. 2 in the division, so it’s not unrealistic to think a pair of big wins would get him right back into the title hunt. Presumably with two working knees.
