After what seemed like an eternity of tasteless trash talk, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight contender, Colby Covington, was unable to put his money where his mouth is, coming up short against Kamaru Usman in the UFC 245 main event last weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada.
That opened the door for his critics, and there are aplenty, to bury him for all the trouble he caused prior to the fight. Retired UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub, however, doesn’t understand why people are so hung up on the welterweight “Chaos.”
“For Colby it’s a character, he just happens to be the most hated character and rides with Trump,” Schaub said (via MMA News). “Obviously there’s the issue with Trump being the president and the moves he makes. But if you ask Colby like, ‘hey man what do you think of the stuff going on with Trump right now with impeachment?’ Or you ask him on his immigration laws, he doesn’t know. It’s just a bit, man. It’s just a bit.”
A bit that may have crossed more than a few lines along the way, to the point where his pre-fight antics overshadowed the fact that he’s one of the best 170-pound fighters in the world, evidenced by his “Fight of the Night” against Usman.
“He’s very, very, very good and he showed it,” Schaub continued. “To me the narrative isn’t that Colby lost, the Trump kid lost, the big-mouth kid got his jaw broke. And I hate the fucking ‘MAGA Jaw.’ Grow up. But the thing to me, the narrative of this is how good is Kamaru Usman? He is so goddamn good.”
He is good … but someone else is “bad.”
