Ilia Topuria is firing back at the doubters.
The world is eagerly anticipating the return of Featherweight’s finest. Topuria, 27, kicked off 2024 in style with his huge second round knockout of the all-time great, Alexander Volkanovski, at UFC 297 in February (watch highlights). He has yet to defend his title since.
An instant rematch for a champion of Volkanovski’s caliber was one quickly thrown out in the aftermath but ultimately led to “The Great” leaning in favor of a rest period after consecutive knockout losses. Therefore, the door opened for former champion, Max Holloway, to become the frontrunner after a sensational performance and last-second knockout of Justin Gaethje at Lightweight to claim Baddest Motherf*cker (BMF) gold in April 2024 (watch highlights).
There’s been little progress on getting closer to a fun Topuria vs. Holloway match up, and the two came to verbal blows online today (Thurs., July 4, 2024). The community has given Topuria flack for his handlings of possible bouts since starting his title reign, and he’s no longer putting up with it.
“To all those who continue to doubt me: Screw all of you, I don’t care about any of you,” Topuria tweeted. “You just project your insecurities onto me. Your envy, born from your inability to pursue your desires, poisons the heart. Keep watching me shine!”
Topuria has been flawless in his 15-fight career thus far, winning by decision on only two occasions (eight submissions, five knockouts). “El Matador” has been adamant he’ll become the first to stop “Blessed” should their fight happen this year as hoped.
