The Australian followed up on his win over Andrei Arlovski with an endless ‘shoey’ parade.
What does it take for an up and coming UFC fighter to get noticed? A kick ass performance in the cage often isn’t enough these days, so some athletes are going pretty far outside the box for attention. In heavyweight Tai Tuivasa’s case, that involves drinking from multiple shoes following his UFC 225 win over Andrei Arlovski.
Tuivasa kicked off the smelly tradition at UFC 221, downing what is known in Australia as a ‘shoey.’ Here’s how it works: you get someone’s steamy hot worn shoe, pour a beer in it, and then down that beer in one big gulp. Oh, and don’t forget to let someone (or several someones) spit in it too.
Originally I was going to break down the intricacies of Tuivasa’s hard fought decision win over a surprisingly game Andrei Arlovski, but why do that when we can watch Tai down multiple shoeys instead. Aaaaand awaaaaay we go!

The SHOEY can’t be stopped. @BamBamTuivasa has another SHOEY with a fan back at the hotel lobby #UFC225. pic.twitter.com/UjCHSV2Svq

As if that wasn’t bad enough, Tuivasa suggested to Ariel Helwani that he’s done a urine shoey before:
Tuivasa just asked me for my shoe to do a shoey. I said I didn’t have alcohol. He said I can piss in it. I asked if he’s ever had that, he said hell yeah. I did not give him my shoe. pic.twitter.com/pxLmljiJhk

Hopefully (dear God, hopefully) the Australian heavyweight is just ‘taking the piss’ out of Ariel. While the shoey is already gross enough to make us believe anything is possible, the press does have a history of falling for fake Bogan party tricks. Fingers crossed the ‘Machida Shoey’ is an urban legend akin to ‘bubbling,’ but who knows? A few more wins from Tuivasa and we should learn just how deep this rabbit hole goes.
