“Every fight starts standing …”

It’s a phrase mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters like to use when describing their strategies going into bouts. The funny thing is that “few fights end standing” would be almost as accurate. Every once in a while you get a bout where two strikers batter each other for 15 (or 25) minutes and refuse to fall, but you’re far more likely for a fight to end with an opponent on the ground. They can be dropped and rendered unable to continue, they can be taken down and submitted, or there’s a third option.

“Ground and pound” may have been made famous by MMA legends like Mark Coleman, but the desire to smash a grounded opponent has long since been picked up and carried forward to the next generation. In today’s Bellator MMA highlight reel, watch the likes of “The Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko, Corey Anderson, “Miss Dynamite” Denise Kielholtz and Michael “Venom” Page pound (or elbow) their ways to dramatic finishes.
