Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic will headline the UFC 211 pay-per-view (PPV) event against the last man to beat him, former 265-pound titleholder Junior dos Santos, on Sat., May 13, 2017 inside American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
More on how that fight came to be right here.
Miocic (16-2) dropped a razor-thin unanimous decision to Dos Santos at UFC on FOX 13 in late 2014. Undeterred, the Clevelander bounced back to capture four straight, including a knockout win over Fabricio Werdum to usurp the throne.
That’s why their heavyweight showdown will play out much differently the second time around, according to the champ’s discussion with UFC.com.
“All I care about is Junior and avenging that loss. I definitely wanted to avenge that loss and the way it worked out, it worked out even better because I’ve got the title now. I’ve got something he wants, but he’s not gonna get it. And a lot has changed in the last few years since we fought, so I don’t honestly care what he brings to the table. I got so much better as a fighter and he’s gonna see a new and improved me.”
Miocic is currently the betting favorite.
It’s hard to know what to expect from his opponent. Dos Santos (18-4) struggled to remain active since their first go-round thanks to recurring injuries. In addition, “Cigano” was finished by Alistair Overeem at UFC on FOX 17, but then recovered by outpointing Ben Rothwell last April.
