A report from Mike Chiappetta of MMAFighting.com has the Strikeforce promotion working to book a light-heavyweight title fight between the promotions current champ Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante (10-2) and top contender Dan Henderson (26-8).
Chiappetta notes that no formal agreement has been made but both sides are currently in negotiations for the fight. The title match will take place on March 5th at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio at an unannounced Strikeforce event.
Cavalcante won the Strikeforce title last summer after defeating Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal at the Strikeforce: Houston event, stopping the former champ by TKO in the third round. The win was “Feijao’s” third in a row and sixth in seven fights. He stopped Antwain Britt and Aaron Rosa by (T)KO in that win streak. Out of his ten career victories, nine have come via T(KO) and has never fought to a decision.
Henderson knocked out Renato “Babalu” Sobral last month at the Strikeforce: St. Louis show in a #1 contender bout. The win put him at 1-1 in the promotion after losing his debut to Jake Shields for the Strikeforce middleweight title in April. “Hendo” is 4-1 in his last five bouts, having also earned wins over Michael Bisping at UFC 100, Rich Franklin at UFC 93, and Rousimar Palhares at UFC 88.
Once negotiations have been completed fans can expect some sort of official word from the promotion.
