Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight title contender, Thiago Santos, was fighting Jon Jones with two wonky knees at the UFC 239 pay-per-view (PPV) event earlier this month in Las Vegas — and nearly upset the longtime champ after five rounds of action.
Or not, depending on who you ask.
So if Santos can perform that well with no scientific explanation as to how he remained upright, it will be interesting to see what “Marreta” is capable of when he makes his return from surgery in early 2020.
“After four hours of surgery, the doctors say everything is fixed,” Santos wrote on social media. “Now my focus is on a full recovery so I can get back in there better and stronger!”
Surgeons repaired a torn meniscus, ACL and MCL.
Santos (21-7), who abandoned the middleweight division back in 2018, rattled off four straight wins at 205 pounds, with four nasty finishes, earning him the aforementioned crack at “Bones.” The loss left “Marreta” sitting at No. 2 in the rankings, one spot above former rival, Anthony Smith.
Making a “Lionheart” rematch feel like a matter of “when,” not “if.”
