It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to place a bet on the Super Bowl, but when you’re lacking access to a premier sportsbook in Las Vegas, Nevada, handing over your money may prove to be a bit more difficult.
Most bookies and gambling websites these days don’t exactly foster confidence when throwing down the Benjamin’s (or Andrew Jackson’s). That’s why most some of us Maniacs like to partake in some other form of gambling.
If you’re stranded, with no office or family pool to run to, gather up some friends and brews and try your hand at the annual “Super Bowl Squares Sheet” game. It requires nothing but dumb luck and ensures even the most clueless of NFL fans go home winners when the Carolina Panthers collide with the Denver Broncos at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Cali., next Sunday night (Feb. 7, 2016).
Anyway, here’s how to play Super Bowl squares game:
- Get friends and find a cozy place to gather, eat and imbibe (crash a party if necessary)
- Download/print the Super Bowl 50 squares sheet right here
- Encourage your “friends” to write their names in the empty WHITE squares (typically for a fee, e.g. $1 per square) until all of them are filled
- Store money in a safe place
- Write numbers 0-9 on a piece of paper, cut them out and toss into a hat/bag
- Pull out one number randomly and write it in the GREY box up top (Panthers) until hat/bag is empty
- Put numbers 0-9 back in hat/bag and redraw
- Pull out one number randomly and write it in the GREY box down the left side (Broncos) until hat/bag is empty
- Hang sheet in a conspicuous place for all to see
- Watch the Super Bowl … and the scoreboard!
At the end of each quarter jot down the score. You are going to use the last digit in each team’s score after each quarter to determine a winner. For example, if the Panthers are winning 14-10 over the Broncos at the end of the first quarter, whichever “friend” has his or her name in the Panthers “4” square that corresponds/intersects with a “0” in the Broncos square wins the pot.
Repeat this exercise at halftime, after the third quarter and, of course, with the final score.
There should be four “pots” that are paid out to the quarterly winner(s). How the pots are diced up (valued) depends on the organizer, as well as how much is actually in the till. Keep in mind that final score winner traditionally takes home the biggest pot, followed by the halftime winner. First and third quarter pots are typically equal … and the smallest.
Remember that Super Bowl 2016 kickoff/start time between Carolina Panthers vs. Denver Broncos is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET on CBS channel next Sunday. Therefore, get this party grid filled up sooner rather than later.
Good (dumb) luck, Maniacs!
