Japanese MMA doing their fun wild stuff with a special exhibition match, featuring boxing legend, Manny Pacquiao.

We can call a rose a rose here and say that Japanese mixed martial arts (MMA) in 2024 is certainly not what it once was decades ago during the PRIDE heyday. That said, the former promoter for said organization, Nobuyuki Sakakibara, still does a great job putting together a spectacle every now and then, and this weekend (Sun., July 28, 2024), live from Saitama Super Arena in the outskirts of Tokyo, Japan, we’ve got Super RIZIN 3, and it has boxing legend Manny Pacquiao taking on kickboxing star Rukiya Anpo.

Channeling the late, great Billie Mays here, but wait! There’s more!

We’ve got former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) title contender, John Dodson, looking to continue his unbeaten streak in bareknuckle boxing, taking on big-punching Takaki Soya. There’s also JMMA and JKICK mainstays like RENA and Hideo Tokoro and YA-MAN and Hiromasa Ougikubo and Mikuru Asakura and, man alive, I’m looking forward to being up before the crack of dawn like I used to back during the days of DREAM (when the author was still relatively young).

Super RIZIN 3 will begin streaming LIVE on RIZIN pay-per-view (PPV) at 12 a.m. ET (5 a.m. UK time) with the ring walks for Pacquiao vs. Anpo scheduled for 5 a.m. ET (10 a.m. UK time). As with all live events, the ring walk times are approximate and subject to change, depending on how the preceding fights play out. International fans looking to watch Super RIZIN 3 can stream directly from the promotion’s website HERE.

Round 1: Anpo in black, Pacquiao in white. Anpo a good 6 inches taller than Pacman. Anpo with a straight right. Anpo doubles up with a 1-2. Pac having a hard time closing distance early. Pacquiao ducks a right and evades and uppercut when he closes in. Anpo gets in a lead left, eats a jab. Anpo to the liver. Manny with an overhand right.

Yutaka Saito vs. Yuta Kubo

Round 1: Kubo in gold, Saito in blue. Slow start, first significant strike is a head kick by Kubo that gets half-blocked. Saito with a blast double attempt that gets stuffed. He’s got Kubo into a corner and they’re in a phone booth. They trade clinch knees. Ref separates them. Kubo kicks low and gets hooked as a counter. Now he lands a big shot as Saito surges forward! Kubo tosses Saito down as he tries to rush forward.

Round 2: Saito sprints forward to try and grab a single, can’t get it. Kubo kicks to the ribs, cracks forearms instead. Kubo kicks as Saito ducks and that nearly ended in disaster for Saito. He managed to deflect part of that, but that was still no fun. Kubo shit talking Saito now, dropping his hands. Kubo cracks into the body again and shucks off the reflexive shot. Saito tries going forward, gets dropped by a jab. Saito tries for a single, can’t get it. Now a double and can’t get that, either.

Kubo with a knee to the ribs as they separate this time that hurts Saito. He charges forward with a big front kick to the torso that drops Saito. The ref steps in and it’s over!

Final results: Yuta Kubo defeats Yutaka Saito

Hiromasa Ougikubo vs. Makoto Shinryu

Round 1: The backstory here is that Shinryu is a former student of Ougikubo and they departed on poor terms. Shinryu in black, Ougikubo in green. Shinryu opens it up with a jab-overhand. Huge takedown slam from Shinryu into half guard. Ougikubo gains full guard and is plunking in right hands from bottom. Shinryu postures up, but Ougikubo pushes away and stands. Ougikubo kicking at the legs repeatedly. Both men land lefts.

I’d call that first frame for Shinryu, but these aren’t scored by rounds, just as a whole fight.

Round 2: Ougikubo blasts forward off a clash of heads into a takedown, but Shinryu pops right back up. Shinryu has a big cut over the left eye from that headbutt. They stop the action and they’re checking out Shinryu. Eventually they clean it up to the point where we can continue.

Much slower pace than earlier. Ougikubo swarms forward, meets a level change by Shinryu, but Ougikubo stuffs the takedown attempt. Left from Ougikubo. A low kick answered by a straight left from Shinryu. Right hand by Shinryu near the bell.

Round 3: Slow pace here to start this last stanza. Ougikubo chin checks Shinryu, and Makoto did not like that. Instant takedown from the younger man, directly into a guillotine attempt. Ougikubo keeps full guard. Ougikubo eventually gets his feet on the hips to push and stand. 90 seconds to go. Ougikubo leaning on his leg kick attack. Ougikubo bullies Shinryu into the ropes, then a corner. Ougikubo clinching, not doing anything. Finally he releases and swings.

Final results: Hiromasa Ougikubo defeats Makoto Shinryu
