There’s no Cub Swanson vs. Jose Aldo rematch happening at UFC 233, according to Cub Swanson.
A report emerged on Sunday from Brazil’s Combate that featherweight veteran Cub Swanson was set to rematch former WEC and UFC champion Jose Aldo at UFC 233 in January. According to Swanson, however, that is not the case.
Swanson tweeted on Monday that he isn’t fighting on the UFC’s first PPV event of 2019, but would be down for taking on Aldo one month later.
I love this fight but unfortunately somebody spoke too soon. I am not fighting on 233 but I am willing to do it February 17th on ESPN 1
— Cub Swanson (@CubSwanson) December 3, 2018
That February 17th date he mentioned is the UFC’s first Fight Night show on ESPN television, and no fights have been announced for that card yet. The event would take place at the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.
Swanson (25-10) is on a three-fight losing streak, having most recently been submitted by Renato Moicano at UFC 227. It’s the first three-fight skid of his entire career. His only career knockout loss memorably came against Aldo at WEC 41 in 2009, when Aldo wiped him out with a double flying knee in eight seconds.
So if we go by Cub’s statement, don’t shut the door on Swanson vs. Aldo 2, just don’t expect it on the UFC 233 undercard.
