Israel Adesanya, who currently holds the middleweight title, claims he’ll tip the scale at under 200 pounds for his light heavyweight title fight opposite reigning 205-pound kingpin Jan Blachowicz on March 6 in Las Vegas.
“I’m not gonna go crazy and order Uber Eats and cakes and whatever, I’m just gonna keep the same energy,” Adesanya told ESPN. “Put it this way. I could still make 185 if I have to. Don’t be surprised if I weigh in at like 193. Don’t be surprised.”
That could benefit a hulking bruiser like Blachowicz, who needs to cut weight to make the light heavyweight limit. And while he may not be as fast as “The Last Stylebender,” there is much more to their 205-pound title fight than just speed.
“At 205 we have different power, different timing, everything is different,” Blachowicz told Just Scrap Radio. “He will be faster than me, but speed is not everything. I have something for him, I am preparing something nice for him. We do a lot of wrestling so maybe I will take him down. But, I like fighting standup and every fight starts standing. If I have a chance to take him down I will do it.”
Blachowicz (27-8) has put together an 8-1 run dating back to Oct. 2017 and is fresh off his title-winning finish over light heavyweight contender Dominick Reyes. Adesanya (20-0), meanwhile, made his UFC debut in early 2018 and since then has racked up nine straight wins, four by way of knockout.
