Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) recently posted a sneak peek of its “Thrill & Agony” video for last weekend’s UFC 238 pay-per-view (PPV) event in Chicago. The series, as the name would suggest, focuses on the thrill of victory, as well as the agony of defeat.
That means mixed martial arts (MMA) fans get a glimpse at the post-fight drama backstage where the cameras rarely go. It’s high fives and butt slaps for the winners, along with tears and hugs for the losers.
The footage that stood out the most, at least from my perspective, was the devastating knockout Jessica Eye suffered against reigning women’s flyweight champion, Valentina Shevchenko. The finish was so violent, color commentator Joe Rogan was practically in shock, while Daniel Cormier was forced to look away.
Fortunately for Eye, she was back on her feet and able to clear the cobwebs. But judging by her backstage reaction, it was a loss that will likely haunt her, at least until she can get back inside the cage and start working her way back to the title.
