Invicta returns with a score to settle. Back in November of 2016, Tonya Evinger took on Yana Kunitskaya in a title defense most considered to be a walk in the park for the surging vet. Kunitskaya, despite her decent 9-2 didn’t seem like she had the proper style to handle Evinger’s wrestle-boxing game. Just two minutes into round 1, she was the new champ, with an armbar submission that shocked everyone.
Controversy followed quickly. A referee instruction that Evinger couldn’t fight off the arm bar attempt using her foot on Kunitskaya’s face seemed to fly in the face of MMA’s rule set. And following an appeal from Evinger, Kunitskaya’s win ended up a no contest. So, now it’s time to do the whole thing again.
