Reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion Kamaru Usman sounds like he’s already preparing for a rematch against longtime rival Jorge Masvidal, despite capturing a unanimous decision victory over “Gamebred” at UFC 251 last July.
I guess Stephen Thompson never got the Email.
That may explain why “Wonderboy” is on social media trying to use logic to secure the next crack at the welterweight crown. Like Usman, the former kickboxing champ also has a victory over Masvidal and is currently looking for his third straight win.
“Well seeing as how I’m the only guy in the Top 5 that Usman hasn’t fought yet….I guess I’m next,” Thompson wrote on Twitter. “Makes sense, right?” Great performance Usman!”
Usman scored a third round technical knockout victory over top contender Gilbert Burns at the UFC 258 pay-per-view (PPV) event last weekend in Las Vegas, improving to 17-1 and breaking Georges St-Pierre’s welterweight win record along the way.
Masvidal (35-14) has not competed since losing to the “Nigerian Nightmare” last summer but took their first fight on less than a week’s notice after Burns contracted COVID-19 and was forced to withdraw.
Usman vs. Masvidal makes more dollars, Usman vs. Thompson makes more sense.
