Following his one sided win over Tyron Woodley, Colby Covington got a call from the president of the United States. Here’s exactly what they said to each other.
UFC Vegas 11 was a great night of fights capped off by a main event that didn’t quite live up to the hype between Colby Covington and Tyron Woodley. But that, once again, was more on Woodley than Covington, who blanked Woodley on the scorecards across four rounds before Tyron injured his rib in the fifth and verbally submitted (watch the highlights here).
It wasn’t the high drama or a gutsy back and forth like the wild Usman vs. Covington title fight back in December of 2019, but if you’re a Colby fan you gotta be happy with the results and how it puts Covington back in the chase for the welterweight title.
Speaking of Colby fans, “Chaos” got a phone call from the president of the United States, Donald Trump, on air following his big win. And boy, was it a Mutual Admiration Society meeting played out on ESPN for everyone to see and hear.
“You are a great fighter, man, I’ll tell you,” Trump told Covington. “You make it so easy, I don’t know how the hell you do it. Congratulations, I wanted to watch that fight tonight. I wanted to watch it. You were so great.”
“Thank you so much, Mr. President,” Covington replied. “You gave me the dragon energy when you shook my hand on Sunday at your rally and it doesn’t matter if King Kong was in front of me, I was not going to lose after getting to shake your hand and be at your rally.”
“He’s a strong looking guy, he’s a tough guy, he’s a great fighter, he’s a champ,” Trump said. “And yet that was easy work, relatively easy work for you. I’m proud of you. Proud of you. Just made a big speech to 35,000 people, I said I gotta get home now to watch Colby . That was fast work, and he’s a good fighter, right.? Did he give you much of a problem? What did you see? Strong guy, right?”
“Yeah strong guy, former champion,” Covington said. “But it didn’t matter who was in there, Mr. President. After getting to see you I don’t care if it was Superman in there, I was beating anybody.”
“That’s great, Colby,” Trump replied. “I’m proud of you, man. I’m a big fan, and I’m proud of you. You’re tough, you have the right spirits. So now go win the next one, and keep it for a long time. Just keep that championship for a long time. You are something. And say hello to all the guys. I appreciated the shout-out tonight too. I’m your fan, you’re my fan. Two of a kind, two of a kind!”
“Thank you so much, Mr. President,” Colby said. “I’m going to bring you the new belt to the Oval Office after you win November 3rd by a landslide.”
“You get that belt and you bring it in and I’ll see you, man,” the president said. “We’re rooting for you, man. Literally, I came in from a big speech tonight and said ‘I gotta get back, I gotta watch this man.’ The man. So you keep it going. Colby, keep it going. You look great, you look fantastic. And take care of yourself, okay? Very proud of you. Very proud of you, Colby.”
The phone call left Covington with quite the glow afterward.
“Oh my gosh, it makes me feel so unbelievably humbling and just inspired, man,” Covington told Megan Olivi after the call. “He’s the greatest president of our lifetime, ever of all time in America. This fight is dedicated to the president and all the first responders and all the military out there. And just like Mr. President, November 3rd he’s going to beat Sleepy Joe by a landslide. You thought tonight was a beating? Just wait til you see what happens November 3rd. So make sure y’all get out there and vote and let’s keep America great!”
