Tweet of the Day: Donald Cerrone offers to step in against Khabib Nurmagomedov

Cowboy Cerrone seems to be taking on every cowboy out there… like Jet Li in a film we’d all rather forget, only better.

It’s not like it’s that difficult for Donald Cerrone to do anything that would cement his legacy as one of the most game fighters of this or any era, but today we’ve seen yet another example of doing exactly the sort of thing that makes him a fan-favorite.

After the truly disappointing news earlier today that Tony Ferguson would be bowing out of his upcoming fight with a returning Khabib Nurmagomedov, many fans were still dealing with the disappointment of missing out on a fight with such high expectations. With less than two weeks to go, the UFC decided to pull Nurmagomedov as well. Fans and MMA media alike wondered on social media what it would take to keep Nurmagomedov on the card and who would take on the Dagestani phenom on short notice.

And that, of course, is like setting up a Bat-signal. MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani ended up with a pleasant surprise on Twitter when this exchange took place:

… Tough sell to fight Khabib on 10 days notice. Guy can’t catch a break. Massive bummer.

It should be noted that if this match were to take place it would be Khabib’s first fight since April of 2014, when he defeated current lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos via unanimous decision at UFC on Fox 11. Cowboy Cerrone is coming off a win at UFC Fight Night 83 in Pittsburgh in late February, where he defeated Alex Oliveira with an arm triangle submission in the very first round.

No word yet on whether or not this fight is even possible and what weight it would be contested at if it were to happen, but it would be just as welcomed by fans as the original bout, if not more. Having defeated a Brazilian cowboy less than two months ago, will he finally be able to take on Dagestan Cowboy as well?
