Tyrone Spong has a message for his family and fans: He’s going to be okay.

Spong suffered a horrific shin injury on Saturday in Istanbul, Turkey, during his GLORY 15 kickboxing match against Gokhan Saki. In a scene eerily reminiscent of Anderson Silva’s leg break against Chris Weidman, Spong broke his right leg throwing a leg kick, then crumpled to the mat in agony.

The fighter underwent surgery on Monday and, in a statement issued through the Blackzilians, says he’s the procedure went well and he’s happy to be home.

“I want family, friends and fans to know I’m okay,” Spong said. “The trip home to Florida was a long one and I am thankful to be back in Florida. I had surgery in this morning and it went perfectly.”

The Surinamese-Dutch kickboxer said doctors have given him a timetable for an eventual return.

“My doctors said it turned out to be a clean break and they feel confident that I will recover 100 percent. They said I can be training for a fight as early as six months if I rehab properly. I feel very optimistic.”
