Tyson Fury calls out Anthony Joshua after Joshua’s KO win

Could we see the undisputed heavyweight title fight happen next year? Tyson Fury wants Anthony Joshua next.

Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury have all four of the major heavyweight boxing titles. Fury took the WBC title away from Deontay Wilder with ease back in February, while Joshua defended his WBA, IBF, and WBO belts successfully against Kubrat Pulev on Saturday in London. A collision course between these two giants seems inevitable, but Joshua didn’t directly call out Tyson Fury in his post-fight interview.

“It’s not about the opponent, it’s about the legacy and the belt,” Joshua said. “Whoever has got the belt, I want the belt, I’d love to compete with him. If that is Tyson Fury, let it be Tyson Fury!”

“The road to my next fight,” Joshua interrupted when the Sky Sports interviewer said the road to undisputed is almost clear. “I don’t care about anything else. It’s just one fight at a time picking them up one by one. That’s all it’s about for me. I’ve got to stay focused.”

Unsurprisingly, Fury saw this and he was prepped to record a short video calling out Joshua, all while sporting an ugly Christmas sweater.

“Well there you go everyone, Anthony Joshua just s—t himself live on television,” Fury said.

“He got asked ‘did he want the fight?’ and he went around the bushes and put his ass in the hedge. I want the fight. I want the fight next. I’ll knock him out inside three rounds. He’s a big bum dosser, can’t wait to knock him out.”

Fury hasn’t fought since beating Wilder and while a trilogy looked to be in the cards, it looks as if the rematch clause has expired and Team Fury has decided to move on. Wilder’s team is trying to force the trilogy through mediation, although personally I feel an immediate trilogy is pointless given how one-sided the rematch was.

The heavyweight landscape is such that Joshua really doesn’t have a lot of viable options that would sell. He’s beaten Dillian Whyte, Alexander Povetkin, Joseph Parker, and won the rematch over Andy Ruiz pretty easily. Deontay Wilder is too busy peddling conspiracy theories about why he lost to Tyson Fury so he’s not in the equations right now. Luis Ortiz getting blasted in the Wilder rematch surely makes the thought of him vs. Joshua wholly unappealing. Joe Joyce’s win over Daniel Dubois was impressive but not title shot worthy.

That leaves Joshua with two realistic options: Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk. Both fights are dangerous and both fights he could very well lose. Usyk doesn’t sell nearly the tickets or PPVs as Fury, so Joshua vs. Usyk wouldn’t be all that bad an Option B in the slightest. But the demand for Joshua vs. Fury is surely at an all-time high and hopefully Top Rank and Matchroom Boxing can play nice (as they have been willing to do on more than a few occasions) and bring this fight to life in the near future.

If you want to be optimistic, which is something I highly recommend against as a boxing fan, Top Rank’s Bob Arum said he’ll get to work on the undisputed heavyweight title clash starting Monday.
