This is the UFC 170 live blog for Rory MacDonald vs. Demian Maia, a welterweight bout at Saturday night’s UFC event at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nev.
MacDonald, who has won four of his past five UFC fights, will face Maia, who has won three of his past five UFC fights, on the main card.

Round 1: Yves Lavigne is the referee. Demian Maia storms and attempts a single and gets it on the second attempt. Maia, like a surgeon passes guard and does to mount. MacDonald is eating shots now, but constantly trying to stop the pass. MacDonald succeeds in getting double butterfly guard, but Maia is still pressing the pass hard. MacDonald pushes Maia’s hips away and manages to stand. The two trade in the center with Maia getting the best with a slapping right hook.

Round 2: MacDonald cracks Maia and temporarily stumbles him, but Maia recovers quickly. Maia shoots and MacDonald stuffs it. Nice jab there from Maia and a left hook. Maia in on two takedown attempts and fails on them both. MacDonald opens up and lands a series of right hooks and uppercuts. MacDonald lands a hard body kick, too. Two excellent jabs from MacDonald and Maia’s nose is bleeding. Hard knee to the body now from MacDonald and he’s doing all the stalking. Good left hook from Maia, but eats two right hands from MacDonald in exchange plus a hard right straight. Hard body kick again by MacDonald and he’s pressing the action. Maia tries to catch a kick for the takedown, but can’t get it. Another right straight from MacDonald and another hard body kick.

Round 3: Hard right hand from MacDonald and he’s picking up where he left off. And another as he continues pressing. Maia in on a single, but MacDonald stuffs it and jams an uppercut for good measure. Maia manages to press MacDonald into the fence and lifts him for a slam double. It works and MacDonald is on his back. MacDonald working from double butterfly guard and reverses Maia to stand. Maia shoots twice and MacDonald stuffs it. One-two lands for MacDonald and another shot from Maia goes nowhere. Hard right hand scores for MacDonald and he stuffs another takedown. MacDonald stuffs the takedown and lands a crisp right hand for good measure as the bell sounds.
