DALLAS — Crisis averted.
After two tense hours, No. 1 ranked UFC welterweight contender Johny Hendricks weighed in at 170 pounds on his second attempt at Friday’s UFC 171 weigh-ins, rendering his championship fight against Robbie Lawler official.
A gaunt and trembling Hendricks initially weighed in at 171.5 pounds, 1.5 pounds above the required limit for welterweight title fights. The second time around, though, Hendricks did what he had to do, making weight to a thunderous applause.
Hendricks’ nutritionist Mike Dolce said Hendricks cut the extra weight after doing some light calisthenics. According to Dolce, the plan was to keep him moving to keep the sweat flowing, and it worked.
“Johny’s scale might have gotten damaged at the hotel gym earlier today,” Dolce said. “We did light workout and the weight fell off easily.”
Lawler successfully weighed in at 170 pounds on his first attempt.
