Update: Hendricks made weight on his second attempt.
DALLAS — Unless Johny Hendricks can make something happen, the UFC welterweight title may remain vacant for the foreseeable future.
Disaster struck UFC 171’s main card Friday afternoon, as a visibly drained Hendricks missed weight by 1.5 pounds ahead of his championship fight against Robbie Lawler.
Hendricks, who weighed in gaunt and shaking on his first attempt, has two hours to meet the required welterweight limit of 170 pounds.
“It was a (surprise). I thought we made it,” Hendricks said. “We’ll see what happens in an hour.”
Lawler successfully weighed in at 170 pounds.
“Nobody saw this coming,” said Dana White to FOX. “He didn’t see this coming.”
Hendricks’ nutritionist Mike Dolce said it was “easy” to get him down to 170 pounds, albeit a tad later than expected.
“Johny’s scale might have gotten damaged at the hotel gym earlier today,” he told MMAFighting.com. “We did a light workout and the weight fell off easily.”
