For the stars of UFC 175, victory came at a cost. UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman, women’s bantamweight titleholder Ronda Rousey, and bantamweight standout Urijah Faber all received potential six-month medical suspensions in the wake of Saturday night’s pay-per-view event, according to information released to MMAFighting.com by the Nevada Athletic Commission.
Weidman fought hard 25 minutes against Lyoto Machida in night’s headlining bout, and the wear and tear showed, as the New Yorker will be forced to receive orthopedic physician clearance on his left jaw, right elbow, right ribs and right ankle before being allowed to return to competition, or otherwise be held out until January 2, 2015.
Meanwhile Rousey, who effortlessly defended her title against Alexis Davis in the night’s co-main event, and Faber, who submitted Alex Caceres via third-round rear-naked choke, will require right hand and left rib clearance, respectively, or otherwise face a similar layoff until January 2, 2015.
Aside from those three, six other fighters who competed at UFC 175 will require medical clearance or otherwise face a six-month suspension, including middleweight prospect Uriah Hall, who gamely defeated Thiago Santos on the pay-per-view card despite a bone in his toe clearly protruding out of his skin for the latter two-thirds of the match.
As for Stefan Struve, whose contest against Matt Mitrione was cancelled at the last second due to a brief loss of consciousness backstage, the Dutch seven-footer will be required to be medically cleared before his next bout, as well as visit a cardiologist every six months to check-in on his heart condition.
