SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Yancy Medeiros came into UFC 177 very much in need of a victory — not only were two of his three UFC fights losses, but his sole win was later overturned after his post fight test.

So getting a promotional newcomer in Damon Jackson was just what the doctor ordered. Medeiros (10-2, 1 NC) put his stamp on the event with by finishing Jackson with a sick reverse guillotine choke at 1:54 of the second round.

The opening round was a bit of a feeling-out process, as Jackson, the Legacy Fighting featherweight champion who took the bout on a week’s notice, and Medeiros engaged in quite a bit of clinch work. But as the round wore on, the talent disparity became apparent, as Medeiros landed crisp strikes and nearly trapped him in a choke.

That choke finally came in the second round. Jackson (9-1) attempted to spin out of a conventional guillotine, but the resulting reverse choke was far tighter tun the original attempt. The Texan went unconscious and referee Jason Herzog stepped in and broke it up.

Medieros, a native of Wai’anae, Hawaii, credit his work with the Diaz brothers for the win.

Nick Diaz Academy,” Medeiros said. “Gracie Academy, thank you very much. Nate Diaz is the man.”
